Frequently Asked Questions
Hike Requirements & Park Guidelines🥾 How physically demanding is the Río Celeste hike?
Guests should be in good physical condition. Reaching the iconic Río Celeste waterfall requires descending and climbing back up approximately 250 steep steps. The climb can be strenuous and is not recommended for guests with severe knee conditions or reduced mobility.
🛂 Why do I need to send a photo of my passport in advance?
Tenorio Volcano National Park strictly requires official guest identification to register and issue entry permits. You must provide a clear photo of each passenger's passport in advance so our team can pre-purchase and guarantee your entrance tickets before park daily quotas sell out.
🏊♂️ Can we swim in Río Celeste? Where do we swim?
Swimming inside Tenorio Volcano National Park (at the Río Celeste waterfall and river) is strictly prohibited by Costa Rican conservation law. However, if you choose Option 3, you will enjoy plenty of swimming time in the refreshing natural pool of Llanos del Cortés Waterfall, or splash through river rapids if you select Option 1 (River Tubing).
🎒 What type of footwear and gear should I bring?
We recommend non-slip hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers for the park trails, as the stairs and forest paths can be humid. Bring water shoes or sandals for swimming or tubing, swimwear, a towel, a dry change of clothes, bug spray, sunscreen, bottled water, and your physical passport or clear photo on your phone.
